Princess Margaret with the Beatles

Still a fairly clean-cut group of young lads from Liverpool, the Beatles’ performance in November 1963 at the Prince of Wales Theatre (in a gala that included Marlene Dietrich) captivated both Princess Margaret and (rather more surprisingly) the Queen Mother.

The queen’s beautiful younger sister was hit hard by her father’s death and soon after fell in love with Captain Peter Townsend, an older man who was divorced and a commoner, and so unsuitable. Instead she married the aristocratic fashion photographer Antony Armstrong-Jones, who turned out to be just as inappropriate, a notorious womaniser who fathered a love child during their marriage. Always the more glamorous of the sisters, Margaret hung around a racy crowd in the 1960s, sometimes to the concern of the authorities, but her marriage collapsed rather swiftly and unpleasantly when pictures of her with one Roddy Llewellyn (many years her junior) on a Caribbean beach in 1976 reached the tabloids. Lord Snowdon, as Armstrong-Jones became, never changed – his second marriage ended in 2000 when it was revealed he had fathered another child (outside wedlock), at the age of sixty-seven. Margaret was gradually to retreat from public life.

Margaret and Snowdon attended at least two more Beatles concerts, although Lennon handed back the MBE he received from the queen, in protest against British support for the Nigerian government in its civil war with Biafran rebels.
